My blu-ray player isn't playing dvd's?

-when i plug in my blu-ray player and put a dvd in the tv says 'no signal' (both are samsung) but the dvd player menu appears at beggining, this also happens with my xbox 360 through hdmi, it works fine but when i go to watch a dvd is says 'no hdcp link could be found'? it isn't my hdmi cable because i bought a new one today and still no luck :( any help would be great.
