What is a good speaker setup for a TV for under $200?

-I am about to purchase a TV that is notorious for having horrible sound output, so I need to get speakers to go along with it. I have done my research but cannot find any good deals. Most of the sources say that it is more worth it to get a decent stereo setup than a cheap 5.1 system... is that true? Could you please provide me with links if you know of any current good deals for either stereo or 5.1 dolby digital speakers?

Also, please give me any tips that you think I should consider since this will be my first tv and speaker purchase ever.Keep in mind that most tv today only have an optical audio output, which has to be connected to a receiver or a home theater in a box that has an optical audio input. This is a digital signal that can carry a multi channel sound which has to be decoded by a Dolby Digital decoder. So you just can't buy a set of speakers and expect to connect it to a tv. If your tv provides a head phone jack you can connect a computer speaker to it, but then again those speakers are limited in power to around 14 watts max. Home theater in a box are not flexible for upgrade or are they very dependable. If a stereo receiver has an optical audio input, then you can use it and just add a set of speakers to it. My recommendation would be an Onkyo HT-S3300, it is a 5.1 receiver and a set of speakers for under $400. You can add a blu ray disc player to it like a Panasonic blu ray disc player model BD-65 and other game console to it also. Hope this will help you out.
Check out the Dayton B652 speakers and a stereo amp by Sherwood...most HDTV's only have optical out though and you would need and AV receiver to get that feature
